Multiparasitism of water mite larvae (Acari: Hydrachnidiae) on a single midge (Diptera: Chironomidae)

چکیده

Multiparasitism by different species of larval water mites was observed on an adult midge collected in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Water mite larvae Hygrobates sp. and Unionicola inactive stage were discovered from a single chironomid female the subfamily Chironominae. Eight parasitized dorsum, four venter first to fourth abdominal segments midge. One attached trochanter left midleg one femur right midleg. Their attachment sites accorded well with site preferences these two genera, as reported past studies. Considering preference for specific legs, partitioning between seems have originated intrinsic each taxon rather than interspecific competition. On other hand, less-engorged among fully engorged Such developmental variations are possibly caused intraspecific competition nutrients conspecific host individual.

Host sex preferences and transmission success by the water mite Unionicola foili (Acari: Unionicolidae) parasitic on the midge Chironomus tentans (Diptera: Chironomidae).

This study examined whether ecoparasitic larval Unionicola foili exhibited a sex bias when infecting laboratory populations of the host insect Chironomus tentans and whether an association with male or female midges increased the likelihood of larval mites returning to the aquatic habitat. When laboratory populations of C. tentans were exposed to larval U. foili, there was a higher prevalence o...

Evaluation of water quality of an urban stream in southeastern Brazil using Chironomidae larvae (Insecta: Diptera).

In order to estimate the water quality of São Pedro stream, through distribution and composition of Chironomidae larvae present in the sediment four sampling sites were selected. In each sampling site, three sediment samples were collected within a period of twelve months using the Petersen (0.0189 m²) and the van Veen (0.0518 m²) dredges. Samples were washed through a sieve with a 0.21 mm mesh...

Cytotaxonomy and Morphology of Chironomid Larvae (Diptera, Chironomidae) in Armenia

In the study of chironomids in Armenia several species of Orthocladiinae subfamily of Cricotopus genus, Diamesinae subfamily of Diamesa genus, and Chironominae subfamily of Chironomus genus, have been identified. In the Cricotopus genus two sibling species were found, not distinguishable by larval morphological features, but clearly distinct cytogenetically. Keywords—Armenia, Chironomidae, kary...

Relationship between wing length and fecundity of a pestiferous midge, Glyptotendipes paripes (Diptera: Chironomidae).

The relationship between body size and fecundity of adult female Glyptotendipes paripes collected along southern shore areas of Lake Monroe, Sanford, FL, was studied by measuring wing length and examining ovaries, follicular development, and number of eggs/egg mass. Wing length of nulliparous, as well as parous females, had a significant (P < 0.01) linear relationship with dry body weight. Larg...
